Chapter 6
Viscount Wyatt Chambers
The sound of hooves in the driveway alerts me. I glimpse at the sky through my window and my heart squeezes in my chest.
The letter I sent to Maggie two days ago was the result of hours upon hours of internal struggle and reflection. I had to come to the conclusion that I could never live with myself knowing I have the ability to help her family.
After Lord Miraday’s party, I did my best to find out who Mr Knight’s banker was and, to my most agreeable surprise, I realized it was Mr Jim Wendian. Jim has been my friend for many years and I know him well. If I ask him to do me a favor, he will accept.
The debt the bank is asking for Mr Knight to pay in the month to come is not a huge amount, but I know for a fact that paying a lawyer and having to face justice is very expensive. It makes no doubt that without my help, he won’t have enough resources to live through winter while still residing at Padmore Street.
The lack of support the Knight family is facing does not surprise me at all. They have many friends, but none of them want to be affected by the scandal. It is such a loud one that I read a piece of it in a newspaper only yesterday. The entire region is accusing him of being a fraud, his business deals are being revoked, his employees handing their notice and his wealthy friends deserting him.
Just like I did.
I press my hands on my eyes as I sigh with discontent. Ever since I have broken off our engagement, I miss Maggie more and more every day. Interestingly enough, I miss her perfume more than anything. Not the scent she buys from Mr Laughford [FC4]in town, no, the smell of her skin and hair. I miss her so much I am about to become crazy if I do not receive an answer to my letter.
I cannot talk to Jim without her consent because I do not know what her father’s opinion on the matter is. I know my sister wouldn’t approve of my offer to help Maggie’s family, but I have decided I don’t care anymore. I want to protect the woman I love from ruin and, even if I won’t be able to marry her, at least I can prevent having her being turned out of her own home.
I wait patiently in my study and my back straightens when Daniel knocks on the door. He walks in, handing me the daily mail and he indicates a peculiar letter.
“The postman said this one was quite urgent, Your Lordship,” he announces.
He squeezes his eyes detailing the letter and I answer in a nod.
“Thank you, that will be all.”
The man shrugs before bowing to me and leaving the room.
I push aside all the other letters, knowing fairly well that the urgent one contains Maggie’s words. I take a deep breath before breaking the seal and my eyebrows knit together in a tight line.
